Caprese Pizza is such a delicious, quick, and easy vegetarian meal, especially when you use naan bread for the crust! You only need 20 minutes and 5 ingredients to whip up this Caprese naan pizza. With layers of fresh mozzarella, sliced ripe tomatoes, fresh basil, olive oil, and balsamic glaze, what’s not to love about this flavor-packed flatbread twist on Caprese salad?

Caprese Pizza (on Naan Bread) - Bowl of Delicious (1)

Naan pizza is my jam for busy nights. I always keep a package of naan bread in my freezer for easy homemade pizza whenever I want it.

There are a few tricks to making naan pizza perfect every time (including toasting the naan before adding toppings to make it extra crispy). You don’t need any sauce for this recipe – just a drizzle of olive oil and sprinkling of garlic powder before adding the tomatoes and cheese, as well as a drizzle of olive oil and sprinkling of salt and pepper after it comes out of the oven!

This is a wonderful end of summer recipe, when tomatoes are at their peak and fresh basil abounds. And you only need to turn your oven on for a few minutes.

Ingredients for Caprese Pizza on Naan (and substitutions)

  • Naan Flatbreadyou can buy this at almost any grocery store. Feel free to use regular pizza dough for this recipe as well (see FAQs and recipe notes for how to do this).
  • Olive Oil
  • Garlic Powder
  • Fresh mozzarella cheese – shredded mozzarella can be used in a pinch.
  • Tomatoes – I like big, thick slices from large tomatoes but halved cherry tomatoes will also work.
  • Fresh Basil
  • Balsamic Glaze / Reduction – optional, but highly recommended (you can buy this at the store or you can make your own balsamic reduction).
  • Salt and Pepper

How to make Caprese Naan Pizza

  1. Preheat the oven. While it’s preheating, bake the naan bread on a baking sheet while you prep the other ingredients. This will help toast it up before adding the toppings, ensuring a crispy crust. Keep an eye on it – if your oven takes a long time to preheat, you may want to take it out before it’s fully heated because you don’t want it to burn!
  2. Drizzle olive oil and sprinkle garlic powder on the naan.
  3. Layer the tomato and mozzarella cheese on top.
  4. Bake until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  5. Place basil leaves on top.
  6. Drizzle with olive oil, and sprinkle with salt and pepper, as well as a drizzle of balsamic glaze, if using.
  7. Cut and serve!

FAQs

Should I really add the olive oil and salt on the pizza after it’s done baking?

YES! I distinctly remember studying abroad in the Naples region of Italy, picking up a pizza with fresh buffalo mozzarella and basil, and watching the cook drizzle olive oil and salt over the entire cooked pizza when it was done. AMAZING. The ingredients on this pizza aren’t particularly salty, so adding more salt will enhance the flavor. You can leave it out if you don’t want it.

Can I use regular pizza dough?

Sure! I recommend baking the dough before adding the toppings, just like with the naan. Spread the dough out and bake after your oven preheats for about 5-10 minutes, depending on its thickness. Then proceed with topping the pizza.

How can I make a single serving?

You can easily make a single serving by using a mini naan flatbread. You can even use a toaster oven if you don’t want to heat up your whole oven.

Ingredients

  • 2 naan flatbreads
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder divided
  • 2 medium or large tomatoes sliced into 8-10 slices
  • 8 oz. fresh mozzarella sliced into 10 slices
  • 12 large fresh basil leaves
  • salt and fresh cracked pepper to taste
  • balsamic glaze for drizzling (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Place naan flatbreads on a rimmed baking sheet (line with parchment for easy cleanup if preferred). While oven is preheating, place naan breads in oven to toast up a bit before topping them (keep an eye on them so they don't burn, if your oven is slow to preheat!). Prep toppings while oven preheats and naan toasts.

  • Drizzle each naan bread with ½ tablespoon olive oil. Sprinkle ¼ teaspoon garlic powder on each. Layer with the slices of tomatoes and fresh mozzarella (I like to overlap them in a circle around the perimeter of the naan).

  • Bake at 425 degrees F for about 10 minutes, or until cheese is melted and starting to brown.

  • Remove from oven, and divide basil leaves on each pizza. Drizzle with remaining ½ tablespoon olive oil on each, sprinkle with a little salt and pepper, and drizzle balsamic glaze, if using. Cut into 4 slices each and serve.

Notes

  • For a single serving:you can use mini naan flatbreads and a toaster oven to make easy work for a single serving.
  • Make it vegan:use a vegan mozzarella substitute and a vegan naan bread (pita or an alternative can also be used).
  • Make it gluten-free:use a gluten-free flatbread.

Made a vegan version of this this evening, it was very good. But it would be good to update your “make it vegan:” note to include vegan naan- Naan is very rarely vegan; it usually has ghee, yogurt, milk or eggs. I used homemade vegan naan.

Hi! I’m in the (very slow and tedious) process of updating my recipes to have nutrition information. I went ahead and added the info to this recipe! Looks like there are about 471 calories (per 1/4 pizza). Please see disclaimer in recipe card that I added- it’s an estimate to the best of my knowledge :-) Hope that helps!
