Clemson names founding dean for new construction college (3)

CLEMSON— The chair of Georgia Tech’s building construction program is headed to South Carolina as the founding dean of the College of Architecture, Art and Construction at Clemson University.

Ece Erdogmus is on the board of governors for The Masonry Society and will be honored as its 44th fellow in October. She helped found the Women in Masonry Fund, has served as chief editor of the Journal of Architectural Engineering and taught structural masonry design at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for 15 years before moving to Georgia Tech.

Erdogmus has a doctoral and master's degree in architectural engineering from Penn State and a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the Middle East Technical University in Turkey. She is a licensed civil and structural engineer in the state of Virginia.

“I am delighted to welcome Ece to the university after a very competitive national search,” Clemson University Provost Bob Jones said in a statement. “The disciplines in this new college support and reflect the land-grant mission of Clemson University, and her leadership and commitment to excellence will drive world-class education, research, outreach and creative endeavors in art, architecture and construction.”

The new construction-focused college was approved last spring as the university’s Board of Trustees voted to divide the former arts college into two— one for architecture, construction and visual arts, and a second for the humanities and performing arts.

Erdogmus was included in the 50 Notable Women in Engineering and Land Development by Engineering Georgia Magazine in 2022 and the Women’s Leadership Institution’s Class of 2022 “Influential Women in Real Estate and Land Use.”

She was selected as a Rising Star by Civil + Structural Engineer magazine in 2018 and honored with AEI’s national Outstanding Architectural Engineering Educator of the Year award in 2019.

Erdogmus and her husband, Brian Skourup, have two daughters.
