Venu Sports has been unveiled as the name of the streaming service being built through the joint venture of Disney, FOX and Warner Bros. Discovery. On track to launch this fall in the US, Venu Sports will bring together the companies’ portfolios of sports networks and certain direct to consumer services. “As preparations for the platform continue to accelerate, we are singularly focused on delivering a best-in-class product for our target audience, built from the ground up using the latest technologies to engage and entertain discerning sports fans wanting one-stop access to live games,” said CEO Pete Distad.

Consumers in general use just as many non-video entertainment providers (6.6) as they do premium video (6.3), and people under 35 use more non-video sources (9.1) than video (7.4). That’s according to Hub’s “Battle Royale” survey exploring consumers’ entertainment choices. Asked to build an “ideal” bundle:
· 71% of respondents included high speed internet in their bundle, and 52% chose a mobile phone plan. (Another 40% chose a live TV bundle.)
· 65% chose Netflix – the only streaming platform to make it into the top 5.
· 43% chose a streaming music subscription. Respondents were more likely to choose streaming music for their bundle than major streaming platforms like Hulu, Disney+ and Max.

“In the past, content like video, gaming, or music were entirely separate. Today, they are all consumed on the same screens and devices, via subscriptions that compete for the same pie of disposable time and money,” said Jon Giegengack, Hub Principal and Founder. “This research underscores the opportunity for established aggregators like Amazon or AT&T to attract subs with bundles that cross content categories.”

The day after President Joe Biden and Donald Trump agreed to two debates, hosted by CNN and ABC News, Vice President Kamala Harris agreed to participate in a VP debate this summer. CBS News will host.

With the tagline “Innovating to Impact,” Tokyo-based Dentsu introduced a reboot of its global brand that nods to its heritage while focusing on its modern day creative, media, data and technology assets. The branding is part of a strategy to position the holding company and agency brands as “an integrated growth and transformation partner” for brands.

The CW announced a fall slate that includes returnees “The CW Sunday Night Movie,” “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”, “Sullivan’s Crossing,” “Inside the NFL” (moving from Thursdays to Fridays) and the fourth and final season of “Superman and Lois” (moving from Tuesdays to Thursdays). Mondays features game shows “Trivial Pursuit” and “Scrabble,” with “WWE NXT” making its network debut on Tuesdays. “Joan” has the Wednesday-at-9p slot, and “The Librarians: The Next Chapter” will air Thursdays at 9p. Yet to be renewed, but still alive, are “All American” and “Walker.”

The Advertising Research Foundation released findings from the second phase of its Attention Measurement Validation Initiative. Key takeaways include:
· The study identified significant differences in the consistency of attention measurements across various methodologies, highlighting the challenges in achieving uniformity in how consumer attention is quantified.
· Findings underscore the critical role of creative elements and media platforms in capturing and sustaining consumer attention, offering advertisers actionable insights for enhancing creative strategies to maximize engagement.
· The initiative has established guidelines for assessing the reliability and validity of attention measurement tools, aiming for better-informed decisions for media planning and advertisem*nt placement.

“The detailed insights from Phase Two of our Attention Measurement Validation Initiative mark a significant step forward in understanding how attention is measured across the industry,” said Scott McDonald, CEO and President at ARF. “Our findings provide a clearer picture of the degree of congruence among current methodologies and pave the way for better-informed use of attention metrics by marketers trying to up their creative game.”

Drake landed the most nominations for the BET Awards, with seven, followed by Niki Minaj with six. Performers for the ceremony, airing Sunday, June 30 at 8p on BET, include GloRilla, Latto, Muni Long, Sexyy Red, Shaboozey, and Victoria Monét.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Not so limited after all? FX, Hulu and the Estate of James Clavell aim extend the hit limited drama “Shōgun” – aka FX’s most-watched show ever based on global hours streamed – for two additional seasons. The show’s key creative partners including Co-Creators, Executive Producers and Writers Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, Executive Producer Michaela Clavell, and series star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada are on board for the development. Production timing has not been locked in, but a writers’ room is being assembled and will begin this summer.

Nickelodeon Studios announced a spinoff series based on characters from the live-action superhero comedy movie “The Thundermans Return.” Production on the show will begin in Vancouver in August. The movie was the #1 Entertainment telecast for the year to date in Live+3 performance across all cable among Kids 6-11, reaching 1.6 million Total Viewers throughout its premiere weekend.

The acquisition of London-based All3Media (“The Traitors”) by RedBird IMI is complete, making RedBird CEO Jeff Zucker Chairman of All3Media. The deal won regulatory approval in the US, UK, and Germany, with All3 emancipated from previous parents Warner Bros. Discovery and Liberty Global. Jane Turton and Sara Geater continuing to lead All3 as CEO and COO, respectively.

Sarah Drew (“Grey’s Anatomy”) is set to star in Hallmark Channel series “Mistletoe Murders,” based on the Audible podcast. Production on the series from eOne Canada and Headspinner Productions starts next month in Toronto.

In FOX Nation limited series “Vietnam: Footsteps of my Father with Harris Faulker,” Faulkner retraces her father’s footsteps through Vietnam where he served two tours of duty as an Army Combat pilot during the war.

STREAMING

As rivals like Disney, WBD and NBCU join forces to win the streaming wars, data suggests the strategy is a smart one. In the past six months, SVOD subscribers migrating to ad tiers increased by 52%, according to Circana’s TV Switching Study, which also showed 75% of US households now subscribe to at least one ad-supported SVOD service up from 55% six months ago. Among those that subscribe to a bundle of SVOD services, 49% see it as a good way to save money and 45% would like more customizable bundled options available. “Cost management is playing a prominent role in consumers’ TV consumption decisions, and this focus is bolstering the proliferation of ad-supported TV,” said John Buffone, VP and Media Entertainment Industry Advisor at Circana. “This behavior presents significant opportunities for advertisers as these audiences are poised to scale rapidly. And this suggests the industry will reap the rewards of recent and upcoming strategies to bundle SVOD services, even when bundling with competitive platforms.”

Outdoor America and former San Diego Chargers and Buffalo Bills linebacker Shawne Merriman have teamed for new streaming service “Lights Out Sports.” The free ad-supported streaming service will contain sports, entertainment and outdoor lifestyle programming. But it won’t take place in the dark – Merriman was nicknamed “Lights Out” during his playing days.

Canela Media struck a strategic partnership with WBD Conexión Latina, adding over 16 million monthly US Hispanic Adults, to increase Canela Media’s scale to over 45 million monthly uniques across its portfolio. “This partnership underscores our commitment to delivering targeted advertising solutions that resonate deeply with diverse audiences, empowering brands to connect effectively in today’s multicultural landscape,” said Isabel Rafferty Zavala, Founder & CEO of Canela Media.

Music video network Vevo has partnered with TCL to launch live linear-programmed channels on streaming service, TCLtv+. The channels will include official releases and live performances, as well as originally produced content by Vevo.

DAZN announced the launch of 10 new channels, including two new boxing channels, in collaboration with Amagi. “Through DAZN’s free tier, fans will be able to access a huge range of sport for free, including even more of the best combat sport. Leveraging DAZN’s worldwide reach and market-leading technology, these channels will unlock the best sports action in new ways,” said Shay Segev, DAZN Group CEO.

TECH TALK

As tensions between the US and China mount, Microsoft has asked 700-800 employees in its China-based cloud-computing and AI operations to consider transferring outside the country, according to The Wall Street Journal. The staffers, mostly engineers with Chinese nationality, were offered the opportunity to transfer to countries including the US, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Employees have until June to decide whether to make the move, a source told WSJ.

COMING UP

Gloria Estefan and Regional Mexican star Ángela Aguilar will be honored at the second annual “Billboard Latin Women in Music” special, airing on Telemundo Sunday, June 9 at 9p.

HBO Original documentary “Moviepass, Moviecrash,” directed by Muta’Ali (“Yusuf Hawkins: Storm Over Brooklyn”), debuts Wednesday, May 29 at 9p. The film chronicles Moviepass’ journey from success to bankruptcy.

SPORTS UPDATE

The NFL schedule is out, and ESPN will feature 25 games, including 21 “Monday Night Football” matchups that feature the Kansas City Chiefs, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Baltimore Ravens and Detroit Lions, multiple times. The Dallas Cowboys host two “Monday Night Football” games, and the Buffalo Bills also appear twice, including on the road at the New York Jets. “Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli” is back for its fourth season, adding an 11th game to their schedule which will begin in Week 1.

For the first time in FOX Sports history, “America’s Game of the Week” will showcase a rematch of Super Bowl opponents when the San Francisco 49ers host the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7. Last season, the game attracted its largest audience since 2015 and ranked as the #1 program in all of television for the 15th straight year among A18-49, per Nielsen. FOX’s 18-week slate across the 2024 regular season features appearances from a lineup of NFC teams that includes the Dallas Cowboys (9), San Francisco 49ers (8), Detroit Lions (8), Philadelphia Eagles (8), Green Bay Packers (8) and New York Giants (8).

Over at Prime Video, the “Thursday Night Football” season schedule features six teams that make multiple appearances, including the 49ers, Jets, Bengals and Rams. Several of Prime Video’s biggest showdowns within the schedule include Aaron Rodgers and the Jets’ home opener against the Patriots on September 19; the Cowboys vs. the Giants on September 26; the Bengals vs. last year’s MVP, Lamar Jackson and the Ravens on November 7; the Steelers vs. Browns on November 21; and the Packers vs. the Lions on December 5.

On a related note, on the heels of its deal with Netflix for Christmas games, the NFL took pains to point out that most of its match-ups will remain free to watch. “It’s still the case that every single NFL game will be shown on free, over-the-air broadcast television to the competing teams’ home markets, as it always has been,” said Jeff Miller, EVP of Communications for Public Affairs and Policy, during a press conference. “We are consistent with that commitment to our local fans. As a matter of fact, even when you consider some of our streaming partners like Netflix or Peaco*ck or Amazon on Thursdays, about 85% of our games are on traditional broadcast television with our partners CBS and Fox. Those games will continue to be seen for free over the air.”
