Ponyboy Curtis is a 14-year-old boy who lives with his brothers, Sodapop and Darry, on the east side of Tulsa, Oklahoma. ponyboy’s brothers are both members of a gang called the greasers. The greasers are constantly in fights with a rival gang called the Socs.
One night, Ponyboy and his friends, Johnny Cade and Dally Winston, go to a movie theater. There, they are attacked by a group of Socs. Johnny stabs one of the Socs in self-defense and they all flee the scene.
The three boys go to an abandoned church in Windrixville to the hideout. While they are there, they discover that the church will be demolished. Ponyboy and Johnny decide to stay in the church to prevent it from being destroyed.
While they are staying in the church, Ponyboy reads an old copy of Gone with the Wind. The book makes him think about the differences between the Socs and the greasers. He comes to the conclusion that both groups are victims of circ*mstance.
Eventually, the police find out that Ponyboy and Johnny are in the church. Dally comes to their rescue and helps them escape.

Darry would of probably went to college if it was not for the passing of his parents. He gave up a lot, but he knew he had to watch out for his brothers.
How does Dally die in the outsiders? Dally is shot by police after robbing a grocery store with an unloaded gun. He is cornered by the police, and raises the gun at them. They shoot and kill him.
But the indelible characters and compelling story have consistently hooked middle school kids, teens, and reluctant readers since The Outsiders was first published in 1967. This book appeals to preteens (many read it in sixth grade) because that's the time when kids break into social cliques and life becomes tribal.

The Outsiders, a novel by S. E. Hinton, was first published in 1967. In the last 50 years it has become a classic piece of literature that teachers use with middle and high school students. Teachers still teach this novel for many reasons, essentially because its importance has lasted for a half of century.
When Two-Bit says, “You know, the only thing that keeps Darry from bein' a Soc is us” (126), he means that of all the greasers Darry was the only one who could have been a Soc; he was smart, athletic, and good-looking.
He works two jobs to hold the family together. The unofficial leader of the greasers, he becomes an authority figure for Ponyboy. He also makes good chocolate cake, which he and his brothers eat every day for breakfast. The other greasers call him “Superman.”
In The Outsiders, Darry feels hatred for Paul Holden because he feels jealousy for Paul, but also because ''he was ashamed to be on our side, ashamed to be seen with the Brumly boys, the Shepard's gang.
The policemen kill Dally. After Johnny dies in the hospital, Dally is so upset, he runs away from Ponyboy and robs a grocery store. The police chase him to the empty lot where the greasers hang out. There, Dally takes out his unloaded gun and threatens the police, who shoot him in self-defense.
According to Ponyboy, Dally died because, “Dally Winston wanted to be dead and he always got what he wanted” (154). Ponyboy fainted in the vacant lot because of the gash he got on his head during the rumble and the shock of seeing two of his friend die.
'Outsiders' Canceled After Two Seasons as WGN America Plots New Direction. The cable network is focusing on a "more diverse programming strategy" as it courts a broader audience. Meanwhile, producers Sony Pictures Television will shop the series.
The Outsiders was quite a controversial book when it was released, and it remains so today. In 1986, it was challenged in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin for its inclusion on an eighth grade reading list because “drug and alcohol abuse was common and virtually all the characters were from broken homes.”
The website Banned Books Awareness: The Outsiders states that it was also challenged in 1992 in Boone, Iowa School District and again in 2001 at the George Washington Middle School that is located in Eleanor,West Virginia.
One problem with this movie is that some scenes seem a bit rushed, such as the scene where Darry hits Ponyboy and he runs away. Also, the acting isn't that great, at least not from C. Thomas Howell (who plays Ponyboy) and Ralph Macchio (who plays Johnny).
