Investment Analysts look in two main types of investments:1. Brownfield (existing) investments 2. Greenfield (ground-up or from scratch) investmentsThe common criteria that an investment analyst look into are the following:1. Payback - how fast can you recover your capital injected? 2. Internal Rate of Return - what is your annualized return on investment, considering the time value of money?3. Tenure - what is your holding period?4. Liquidity - how fast can you exit the investment without incurring losses? Investment analysts also assess investors' expect return. For instance, a brownfield investment maybe less risky compared to greenfield investments and hence investors may demand higher return from greenfield projects.

In my opinion, a well rounded and mature Investment Analyst should possess a never ending hunger for acquiring knowledge and be curious to learn new stuff every day. I have worked with Investment Analysts who don't have formal big certifications, but are so knowledgeable in what they do because of their acquired wisdom. In addition, Investment Analyst must also stay on top of latest industry trends so as to adjust their strategies and be agile. Other soft skills are essential and goes without saying for anyone so that they don't become a dinosaur

3 Challenges and opportunities

An investment analyst's career is filled with many challenges and opportunities. Dealing with uncertainty, volatility, and complexity in the financial markets, as well as balancing multiple projects, clients, and priorities can be difficult. Additionally, staying ahead of the competition and innovation in the industry, adapting to changing regulations, standards, and expectations, and managing stress, workload, and work-life balance are all challenges that an analyst must face. On the other hand, there are also many opportunities for learning from experienced mentors and peers, expanding the network and reputation in the industry, advancing to higher positions such as senior analyst or portfolio manager, exploring different sectors, regions, and asset classes, and making a positive impact on society and the environment through responsible investing.
