Ah yes, the ole aimless discrediting of someone you don’t agree with. It’s a Rant staple.

I never praised Arkansas, I simply pointed out in a debate on whether Jay was a top 3-5 coach in the conference that there are plenty of guys with less NIL resources that have been a model of consistency at a high level for a very long time.

Buying players is easy. Maineri could’ve done it too if NIL were legal when he was around. Jay inherited the “monster” based on the current climate in college athletics, he’s not building it.

I never said it wasn’t. But 76 Ks is a lot

It’s also fair to say he looked foolish at times against high level sec arms. And he made hay against lower level arms

i’ve always said the ks only matter if he isn’t producingZ

a SO isn’t worse than a GO. it’s better than a Double play ball.

He slashes .301/.443/.703 with 28 HR and 59 RBIs

he also went from 69 SO in 161 AB to 76 in 229. that’s a huge improvement.

Jared Jones in 2024 (65 games)
.300 / .448 / .736 / 1.184, 19.7 BB%, 25.9 K%

Jared Jones vs. State, Arky, Vandy, Florida, Tenn, and A&M (19 games)
.268 / .388 / .507 / .895, 13.0 BB%, 28.2 K%

The difference between .268 and .300 is 2 hits.
The difference between .388 and .448 is 5 hits/walks/HBPs.
The difference between 25.9% and 28.2% is 2 Ks.

He performed slightly worse against the absolute best competition than he did overall. Which honestly is to be expected. Most players will perform worse against Hagen Smith than not-Hagen Smith. But there wasn't a massive gap here. And he still OPS'd .895 in these 19 games as a true sophom*ore.

If you’re good with your power hitter striking out a lot as long as he’s slugging then fine. That’s the way baseball is — go 1-4 with a HR or double and nobody cares what you did in the other 3 ABs. Like it or not, I get it.

I agree he wasn’t the problem with this team and he did get better from his freshman season. But in my view there was still too much swing and miss against quality pitching, and at times he looked completely overmatched. He also had some stat padding against the McNeeses of the world.

Jay just has too many of those guys in the construct of this roster. We either hit solo HRs or we didn’t produce much offense most of the season. Jared can serve a good role at cleanup with those numbers. The problem is he wasn’t cleaning up anything. That’s on Jay. Too much slugging / swing and miss on this entire team.

but he’s not a .250 hitter.

and if you go 1-3 with a walk and a HR yeah that’s a pretty good day.

and neither is Tommy. the issue was we had 4-5 guys in the lineup who gave us very little way too often.

People will have bad games. We were unstoppable last year because when Crew was down Tommy could pick him up, or beloso or dugas or Jobert or morgan.

One game examples mean nothing though.

great hitters will go 0-5 in a season.

and like i said, a SO isn’t always the worst out. is a 1/3 day with 2 strikeouts worse than a 1/3 day with a fly out and a grounding into a DP?

He is starting to hit for average, he has power and he gets on base. thats a good player, and if he can make another step on the SO front then he’s a scary af player

Man I agree 100 percent. Jay is building a monster.

People forget that it wasn’t until Sabans third championship before he perfected having a monster program that could sustain the championship success.

This year was always going to be hard with a short recruiting cycle when he came on plus what we had left.

A few injuries and guys not living up to hype hurt us along with a tough schedule. We lost a lot of 1-2 run ball games that a salty vet team likely doesn’t lose.

Jay will have us top or near top of transfer portal and top of high school recruiting again this year.

I think if our schedule and been flipped we finish 17-13 in the sec and we are hosting instead of 13-17 on road at unc

I agree. I do think he needs to evaluate who and how they're positioning defensively. That goes hand in hand with the pitch selection as well. The infield shifts have actually hurt LSU and the outfield depth is head scratching at times.

Pearson playing so deep in a 1 run game with a runner on 2nd was interesting.
